The Rev. Robert Patterson, Sr. (1773-1854) Late in the year of 1812 or early the following year, the Pittsburgh publishing firm of R. and J. Patterson reportedly turned down the opportunity of underwriting the costs of printing Solomon Spalding's "Manuscript Found." Spalding never came up with the money himself, and so the story was not published during his lifetime. According to one source, Rev. Patterson again examined the manuscript, after Mr. Spalding's death, but still did not provide funds for its publication.
